When design and sewing come together, the result can be something truly extraordinary. The sewing company Pattern & Grading, a member of Textilproduenterna, recently delivered 200 chair cushions for a Swedish-made outdoor piece of furniture. The company was responsible for the entire process from design and material procurement to the actual sewing production. The result is a piece of furniture that is entirely Swedish, from wood to textile.
An unusual assignment
For a company that mostly sews clothes on a daily basis, the assignment was something new and inspiring. Getting to work with interior design, and also contributing to a piece of furniture where all parts are Swedish-made, has been a milestone.

“We don’t usually sew much interior design, so this was a really fun project. The fact that we were also able to help make the piece of furniture entirely Swedish-made feels extra nice,” says Sara Högblom at Pattern & Grading.
From fashion to furniture
For everyday use, Pattern & Grading produces clothes for the Esther & Inez brand. They work with so-called production on demand, where garments are sewn after order to minimize inventory and waste. The company also offers special orders where customers can have garments tailored to their own needs.
Taking on interior design assignments has therefore opened new doors. In addition to the chair cushions, they have sewn 100 duvet covers and pillowcases for a Christmas campaign, and more similar assignments are in the works.
Sustainability in focus
The company’s operations are built on a strong commitment to sustainability. Production is run on 100 percent fossil-free electricity and 80 percent of the waste is recycled or sorted at source. The sewing work is carried out by women who were previously housewives and refugees, but who have received both education and a secure professional role through the employment.
“For us, it is important that our work makes a difference, both for the environment and for the people who are part of our business,” says Sara Högblom.
New technology for the future
To further streamline and reduce environmental impact, Pattern & Grading has also invested in CLO 3D, a digital design solution that makes it possible to develop products faster and with fewer resources. In this way, they can reduce both costs and climate impact while maintaining quality.
A piece of furniture with a story
Pattern & Grading shows with its latest assignment that a piece of furniture can be more than just a piece of furniture. When all parts – from wood to fabric – are produced in Sweden, not only a product is created, but also a story about sustainability, craftsmanship and cooperation.

“We hope that more companies see the opportunity in choosing local solutions. Swedish-made products are of high quality and contribute to both employment and reduced environmental impact,” concludes Sara Högblom.
